Hinggi (men's blanket)
| | | Period: | Ca. 1940 | | Yarn: | Cotton, hand-spun, medium | | Technique: | Warp ikat | | Panels: | 2 | | Design: | A remarkable aspect of the design of this hinggi is its cleverly hidden asymmetry. The dyer created an intricate midfield that at first glance appears ot be symmetric as its top and bottom mirror each other, but the middle of the three bands, right on the axis, is inherently asymmetric. It has a wavelike pattern with tops and troughs that do not mirror each other. This kind of hidden asymmetry is found almost exclusively in early specimens.
