344 Solor Archipelago, Alor

Kafate (sarong)

Locale: Dulolong village, west of Kalabahi on the northern shore of the Bay of Kalabahi. Alurung people.
Period:
Yarn: Cotton, hand-spun, medium, and silk pinstripes
Technique: Warp ikat
Design: Kafate, sarong, a variation of the type Tenapi Matang Kari. This type is the hallmark design of the Suku Uma Aring, or 'Youngest Brother' lineage.
Comment: [PHOTOGRAPHY PROVISIONAL] Dulolong is where the rajas of the Nampira dynasty lie buried. We stayed at the classy losmen in the residence of the previous Raja Nampira in 1981, a true gentleman and a great storehouse of information on the local culture. The acquisition of this piece therefore had not just ethnographic interest, but also emotional value. For a map of Dulolong's location see page with additional information.
