Tapis (sarong)

Locale:
Period: Early second quarter 20th c.
Panels:
Design: Tapis inu, without secondary decoration in embroidery on the blue bands. According to one source, the embroidery was often added years time after the sarong was completed; according to another embroidering gets more difficult once the ikated cloth has been sewn together, which would mean than the cloth is complete, intended to go through life without secondary decoration.
Size: x cm ( x in)
Yarn: All ikat work in quadruple-ply very fine hand-spun yarn, plain areas in machine-made yarn.
Comment:
Background: Additional information in chapters on Sumatra and Lampung.
Sources: Very similar to a younger specimen in the Lewa Pardomuan collection, which does have the secondary decoration in embroidery.
